The Tornados debut comes under first-year coach Adam Malloy
BREVARD N.C. – First-year coach Adam Malloy and the Brevard College cross country teams are set to open the 2013 campaign when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to run in the Eye Opener Invitational at Milliken Park Friday.
In the 2012 Eye Opener, the men finished eighth in the team standings, while individuals Dakota Poindexter and Josh Mower finished in the top-35. Angela Canale paced the women’s side following a 32nd place finish while the Tornados finished 11th.
On the men’s side, senior Patrick Helmick was named to the Preseason All-SAC second-team, while the Tornados were selected fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll.
Helmick will be one of seven seniors to lead the experienced Tornados men’s squad. The Milford, Del., native finished the 2012 slate with five top-20 finishes.
Seniors Erik Gibbs and Chris Shore will add depth to the team, while BC will rely on Shawn Deese and Shane Shelton to provide support to the veteran staff.
Sophomore Hannah Cook and senior Canale were named to the Preseason All-SAC first-team while the Tornados were selected seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll on the women’s side.
Cook, last year’s SAC Freshman of the Year, and Canale, who had four top-10 finishes in 2012, will pace the Tornados as they were picked seventh and return three runners from last season.
Along with Canale and Cook, Heidi Kaartinen, Ashley Lowe, Carolina Christiansen and Olivia Fawcett will provide the depth for the team.
The women’s team is slated to run the 5K starting at 6 p.m., while the men will tackle the 8K at 7 p.m.
