BREVARD, N.C.- Despite a late rally and a goal from Yuki Soga, Brevard fell 3-2 in a tightly contested match against Queens in a South Atlantic Conference bout Sunday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.
The Royals continue their hot start to the 2013 campaign and improves to 5-1-1, 1-0-1 SAC on the season while the Tornados dropped their third consecutive match and sit at 3-3-0, 0-0-1 SAC.
“It was a tough game, we knew Queens was organized,” said head coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara. “We practiced well, we were organized well and I’m really proud of our girls.”
In the 22nd minute, the Royals Brooke Foil found Ashley Osiecki inside the box and Osiecki bested BC goalkeeper Brittany Webster to give Queens an early 1-0 advantage.
The Tornados responded in the 41st minute when Kaitlin Burns notched her first collegiate goal after her shot hit the post and ricocheted into the back of the net while Elena Crowe picked up the assist.
“She (Burns) has improved a lot in the last month,” said Shinohara. “She has a great touch on the ball and she holds the ball really well. When she gets the ball, you feel that she will do something special.”
The Royals regained the lead again in the 54th minute when Cassandra Nelson found Logan Vitale wide open in front of the net and Vitale chipped in the go-ahead goal to make it a 2-1 match.
Queens’ Kelli Gottry made it 3-1 when she scored from 12 yards out from the right side. However, Soga netted her team-high third goal on the season in the 83rd minute on a header when she received a feed from Clair Deese to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
The Royals were able to stave off BC in the waning minutes to claim the victory. Queens outshot BC, 8-2, in the first half and 13-6 on the day. Webster accumulated four saves while her counterpart, Jessyca Young stonewalled three shots.
