Tornados open season with 75-45 exhibition loss to Catamounts

Winn leads Brevard effort with 14 points

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Shannon Reid era commenced Saturday night, as the Tornado women's basketball team was downed 75-45 by Western Carolina in exhibition play. Samantha Winn (Candler, N.C.) paced the Brevard effort with 14 points.

The Tornados never led but kept their Division I foes within striking distance for most of the game. The Catamounts reeled off a 10-0 run midway through the first half, capped by Brooke Johnson's (Seymour, Tenn.) lay-up at the 5:10 mark, to build their lead to 34-17. But Brevard closed the half with seven straight points of their own, including a three-pointer by Winn with 25 seconds left in the period, to send the game to intermission at 34-24.

Brevard kept the deficit in single digits as late as the 10:57 mark of the second half, when Anna Schlobohm's (Greensboro, N.C.) basket cut the Western Carolina lead to 48-40. But the Catamounts, winners of 25 games a year ago, put the outcome to rest with an 18-0 run over the next seven minutes and change, which was finally snapped by another trifecta by Winn at the 3:35 mark to make the score 66-43. The Catamounts closed the game on another 7-0 run to make the final score 75-45.

"I was very pleased with the way we hung in the game through the midway point of the second half," said Reid after the completion of her first game as head coach. "The team did a very good job of sticking together; that's something we can build on as we start the regular season next week."

The Catamounts were led by Heather Swayne (Raleigh, N.C.), who scored 11 points. Western Carolina shot 42.1% from the floor and made just one of 14 three-point baskets. Schlobohm scored 10 points for Brevard in her collegiate debut, while Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) led the Tornados on the boards with six rebounds. Brevard shot 22.2% from the field and committed 26 turnovers.

The Tornados open the regular season next Saturday against Lees-McRae at the CNC Classic in Jefferson City, Tenn. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. The Catamounts face North Carolina in their regular season opener, Friday night at 7 p.m.
