Tornados Set to Tangle with Tusculum

BC looks to snap its six-match winless streak

The Brevard College women’s soccer team wraps up a two-match home stint when it welcomes Tusculum in a South Atlantic Conference match Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.

• The Tornados wrap up their longest home stint in a month after playing four of its last six on the road. BC will enjoy its home confines in the coming weeks as it plays three of its next five on the home pitch.

• On Saturday, BC saw its winless streak reach six while dropping a 3-0 decision to Lincoln Memorial in conference action. LMU’s Michelle Hunter paced the Railsplitter offense with a pair of goals while Lincoln Memorial outshot BC, 18-7. Sarah Fonger led the Tornados with three shots while Clair Deese recorded two. Senior Jamie Bundy made her first appearance on the season following a preseason injury.

• Offensively, Head Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara’s team has scored more goals this year (12) than it did all of last season (10). The Tornados are 3-0-1 when producing double-digit shots and 0-5 when held to single digits in the category.

• Kaitlin Burns (12) and Megan Jenkins (11) are first and second in shots while Fonger and Deese are tied for third with 10. 14 Tornados have taken a shot on the year. Yuki Soga leads the team in goals (three) and points (seven). Katherine Nickels, Fonger, and Burns have two goals apiece.

• Senior goalkeeper Brittany Webster has started all nine matches this season and has racked up 31 saves and three wins for the Tornados.

• Tusculum is 4-3-3, 2-0-2 SAC and is hasn’t been defeated in its last five matches. The Pioneers battled to a scoreless tie with Anderson Sunday afternoon, snapping a three-match win streak. However, Tusculum’s defense has proved to be stout while not allowing a goal in the last 496:08 minutes of action (Sept. 15). 

• The Pioneers have five players who have recorded double digit shots on the season. Jenique Thombs leads the team in shots (21) while Amy Neltner paces the squad in goals (three) and points (eight). No player on the Pioneers has started all 10 matches this season.

• Tusculum has won four of the last five in the series including a 6-0 victory last year. The Pioneers have blanked BC on three occasions during the stretch; however, BC claimed a 2-0 win in the 2010 season.
