BC Cross Country Performs Well at Royal XC Challenge
BC outperformed multiple SAC participants
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Brevard College seniors Josh Mower and Angela Canale paced their respective squads while the Tornados traveled to the Royal XC Challenge hosted by Queens in Charlotte, N.C. Friday afternoon.
For the fourth consecutive meet, Mower led the men’s group while he turned in a time of 26.50.8 in the 8K to finish 41st in a race that saw over 220 Division II athletes. Freshman Marc DeLisle continued to impress during his freshman campaign after completing the course in 27:22.1 to finish 59th while senior Jordan Tager was only steps behind with a 61st place finish with a 27:27.6 mark.
Sophomore Patrick Helmick (27:58.2), senior Erik Gibbs (28:14.2) and senior Shane Shelton (29:56.7) finished 80th, 95th and 149th, respectively, while the men’s team finished 9th out of 28 DII schools.
The men’s team bested conference foes Catawba and Newberry by well over 160 points while holding a slim two point advantage over Queens (299-301) and three point margin over Wingate (299-302).
On the women’s side, Canale completed the 5K in 20:11.8 to claim the top spot for the Tornados while finishing 81st out of 240 DII competitors. Freshman Madison Smith clocked in a time of 20:46.6 to claim 108th while teammate Heidi Kaartinen finished the course in 20:53.2. Elena Raygoza needed 21:07.1 while Ashley Lowe set a personal-best with a time of 21:22.0.
The women’s squad finished 17th out of 30 DII schools and outperformed conference rivals Tusculum by 40 points, Catawba by 55, Carson-Newman by 90, Coker by 227 and Newbery by 248.
