Late Magic Pushes BC Past Catawba, 2-1
An own goal in the 88th minute was the determining factor
BREVARD, N.C.- In one of the wildest endings in Brevard College soccer history, the Tornados claimed a 2-1 victory over Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference match Saturday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.
The Tornados (4-8, 2-5 SAC) have won consecutive home matches for the first time since the beginning of the season (Sept. 7 & Sept. 11) while earning their fourth win on the season. BC hasn’t won four matches in a season since the 2008 campaign. The Indians (7-4-1, 3-4-1 SAC) saw their two-match win streak snapped while losing on the road for the first time in nearly a month (Sept. 25).
“Hard work won us the game today. We had to make things happen by working hard, staying on track and sticking to the game plan,” said BC head coach and athletic director Juan Mascaro. “We just love Brevard College,” Mascaro stated on his team being 4-2 at home this season.
“Coach put me in to outrun defenders and I did,” said Goettl. “It was a beautiful cross from Bagwell.”
Both teams racked up shots in the first half as the teams combined for 15 total.
In the 74th minute, the Tornados fell a man short following the second of two yellow cards issued to Marcelo Betcer. The Indians wasted no time capitalizing while Corey Faughnan headed in a pass from Michael Waller in the 76th minute to knot the match at 1.
With time dwindling down the in the second half and overtime almost certain, Winston Haddock pressured the Indian goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle while he was retrieving a ball causing Cardelle to misjudge the ball allowing it to slip past him for an own goal. The goal came with 1:57 remaining in regulation.
The teams combined for 26 shots while both goalies earned four saves on the day. Goettl paced the Tornado squad with four shots while Rhem Stubbs and Betcer racked up three. Faughnan paced both teams with eight while five landed on target.
The Tornados look to continue their winning ways Tuesday when they welcome Anderson in a SAC match at 4 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field.
