Tornados Shoot Past Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn.- Brevard College’s Dominique Pickett poured in a career-high 34 points to lead the Tornados to their first win of the season, a 95-73 victory over the Tusculum College Pioneers in South Atlantic Conference action from Pioneer Arena on Tuesday night.

Pickett eclipsed his previous career high of 31 by shooting 12-of-20 from the floor, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. The redshirt senior also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Miles Leathers also notched his career high in the scoring column, dropping 21 points on an efficient 7-for-11 performance from the field. Leathers added five points from the free throw line.

In addition to Pickett and Leathers, Darius Moose added 15 points and Manzey Miller chipped in 14. Moose also distributed a career-high 10 assists in the win.

“It’s hard to pick one guy, a lot of guys played really well,” said head coach Lee Burgess. “I felt like we stuck together as a team through the whole thing.”

With the game tied 34-34 after the final media timeout of the first half, the Tornados closed the first half on a 10-2 run to bring a 44-36 lead into the break. A Leathers putback with 2:29 left in the half gave BC the lead for good.

Leathers had 18 points before the break, including seven over the final 3:30 of the opening half.

The Tornados kept Tusculum at bay by shooting a scorching 73.9 percent (17-of-23) field in the second half, which included a ridiculous 11-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Brevard’s 95 points serves as a season-high in scoring for the Tornados, and the 22-point margin of victory is the largest ever in the all-time series with Tusuculum.

“I think we’re capable of much better than what we’ve shown (this season)”, added Burgess. “Hopefully something like this gives them some confidence to validate that, and we can keep moving forward and keep getting better”.

The Tornados resume play Saturday afternoon with a nonconference bout against Furman University in the Timmons Center at 12 p.m. The Paladins topped BC 76-53 in an exhibition game in Greenville last November.
