Tornados Ready to Battle Bears

BC seeks its third consecutive win

The Brevard College women’s basketball team seeks to extend its win streak to three games when it welcomes Lenoir-Rhyne for a South Atlantic Conference bout Wednesday evening in Boshamer Gymnasium at 6 p.m. in Brevard, N.C.

Schedule Notes:  The Tornados (2-3, 1-2 SAC) earned consecutive victories for the first time since Nov. 16 and Nov. 26, 2011, when they defeated Pfeiffer in nonconference action, 79-69, Saturday afternoon. The BC offense exploded for 47 first-half points while shooting 60% from the floor while Shelby Wolfe returned with a bang with a 16-point first half effort. The Falcons would cut the deficit to seven with 1:15 remaining, but the freshman duo of Madison Lenox and Chelsea Turner clamped down to combine for five unanswered points while the Tornados collected their first home win of the season. After playing five of its first seven on the road, BC is playing its second of three consecutive home games before heading to Alaska before the Christmas break.

Trending Trio: Sophomore Katie Williams (12.2), freshman Lenox (10.8) and junior Taylor Hiatt (10.0) lead the squad in scoring while Hiatt currently sits atop the leaderboard in 3-point percentage in the SAC (50%). Williams is tied for first on the Tornado team with five steals while Hiatt leads the team in minutes per game (32.2).

It’s Not Personal:  The Tornados lead the conference by committing only 15 fouls per game. BC committed only 13 fouls against Pfeiffer while the Falcons accumulated 27. Third PU players fouled out of the contest. The Tornados have committed 13 fouls or less in their last three games.

Wolfe Bitten: After missing the Tusculum game with injury, Wolfe scorched Pfeiffer by dropping a season team-high 22 points while knocking down 7-of-11 from the field. The Pittsboro, N.C., native led both teams with 11 rebounds while dishing out four assists and collecting a blocked shot and a steal. She leads the team in rebounds (6.0) and is tied for second with six assists on the season.

Preseason Power: L-R (4-2, 1-2 SAC) was picked to finish second in the SAC in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, trailing Newberry by only two points (114-112). The Bears were ranked 23rd in the DII Bulletin Preseason poll after reaching an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season.

Dangerous Duo: The Bears junior duo of Jazmine Charles (19.3) and Jenni Gust (16.2) sit first and fifth, respectively, in points per game this season. Charles dominates the boards as well while sitting third in the SAC with 8.2 rebounds per contest. She has scored at least 20 points on four occasions in six games with a season-high 25 coming against Lees-McRae Nov. 10. Gust enjoyed a season-high 23 points against Barton Nov. 9 and has knocked down a three in all but one game this season.

2012-13 Recap: The Bears swept BC last season while the Tornados kept it interesting in the second meeting (58-53, Feb. 16). L-R cruised to a 77-49 victory Jan. 12. Wolfe led the Tornados with 13 points in the Feb. meeting.

Series History: L-R has won 11 consecutive games against BC since 2008.
