BREVARD, N.C. - A half-court three-point buzzer beater from Queens’ Shonice Pettaway stunned the home crowd while Queens University of Charlotte squeaked past BC, 67-66, in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C.

The Royals (3-5, 2-3 SAC) claimed their second consecutive victory by a total of three points after defeating Tusculum, 77-75, last Saturday and defeated BC in the first-ever meeting between the two squads. The Tornados (2-5, 1-4 SAC) wrapped up a three-game homestand with consecutive losses despite a career-high 21 points from freshman Madison Lenox.

The Tornados stormed out to an early 8-0 advantage following an inauspicious beginning while Queens received a technical prior to the tip. BC’s Katie Williams chipped in with four points while Chelsea Turner drained a triple during the spurt.

However, the Royals responded with a 9-0 run and took a one-point lead following a Lacey Singletary layup.

Both squads played even throughout the first half while the game saw six ties, but Queens was able to take a four-point lead into the intermission, 40-36, after Pettaway knocked down a pair of free-throws with a tick left on the clock.

Williams enjoyed a 10-point performance while Pettaway notched 14 points and teammate Tia Hudgins added 12 in the first 20 minutes.

Queens stretched its lead to seven, 56-49, following a made free-throw from Nikia Squire, but the Tornados responded with a 7-0 run thanks to a jumper from Lenox and another three from Turner.

Lenox continued her highlight day with a steal before ripping off five consecutive points prior to a Taylor Hiatt three to give the Tornados a 64-58 lead with 1:53 remaining in regulation.

The Royals refused to back down while Pettaway buried a jumper followed by a pair free-throws from Singletary made it a 64-62 game.

Queens fouled immediately, but Lenox knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 14 seconds remaining. However, Singletary snagged a rebound and scored a basket to cut the deficit to two, 66-64, with six seconds on the clock.

The Royals forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and Pettaway threw up a three-pointer from half court that banked in as the buzzer sounded, giving Queens the one-point victory.

Pettaway led both teams with 26 points and nine boards while Lenox paced the Tornados and Williams tallied 17 points and a team-high five rebounds.

The Royals dished out 17 assists, compared to BC’s six. The Tornados held the advantage on the charity stripe (22-26 to 12-16).

The Tornados return to action Friday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Anchorage, Alaska to battle Saint Leo in the AT&T Hoops Classic at 5 p.m. ET.
