Tornados Blow Out Owls in Home Opener, 70-42

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team tipped-off their 2008-09 regular season the right way on Tuesday night, as Coach Jones’ squad used a big second half to blow out the Warren Wilson Owls 70-42 in the newly renovated Boshamer Gymnasium.

With the win the Tornados improve to 1-0 on the season, while Warren Wilson falls to 3-4 on the year.

The Tornados struggled in the opening half of their 2008-09 home opener, as Brevard shot only 37.9 percent from the floor (11-of-29) and were 0-of-8 from behind the three-point line. 

Despite falling behind early 3-0, the Tornados stormed back to take a 4-3 lead on a lay-up by junior forward Jonathan Whitson, a lead that BC would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

The defense of Brevard carried the Tornados in the first half, as the Tornados held Warren Wilson to only 16 points in the first 20 minutes of play.  The Owls shot 24.0 percent from the field (6-of-25) and had eight turnovers.  Despite 10 turnovers of their own, the Tornados took a 23-16 lead into the halftime break.

The second half proved to be much different than the first, as the Tornados outscored the Owls 47-26 over the final 20 minutes of play to pull away with the 70-42 win.

The Tornados as a team connected on 54.8 percent of their shots (17-of-31) and hit four three-pointers en route to the home opening win.

The inside game served the Tornados well and the second half, as Whitson had 19 points in the second half, while center Sam Carlisle had all of his 10 points in the final 20 minutes of play.  The Tornados also pulled down 26 rebounds in the second half compared to Warren Wilson’s seven.

Brevard was led by Whitson, who started off the 2008-09 season well on Tuesday night, scoring a game-high 29 points and hauling in a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.  Carlisle added 10 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward Joseph Chilton had seven points and eight boards.  Guard Darin Dellinger poured in seven points to go with his five assists, while Andrew Freeman had seven points for the game in 24 minutes of play.

Warren Wilson was led by their two sharp-shooting guards in Aleks Spasovski and Jermon Marsh.  Spasovski had a team-high 14 points, while Marsh poured in 10 points and hauled in a team-high five rebounds. 

For the game, the Tornados held Warren Wilson to 28.3 percent shooting and forced them to commit 17 turnovers.  Brevard shot 46.7 percent and out-rebounded the Owls 47-22 for the contest.

The Tornados will not have long to rest, as BC will hit the road for the first of seven consecutive road contests on Thursday night, when they will play at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. at 7 p.m.

Warren Wilson will next be in action on Monday, November 24, when they will host Berea College at 7 p.m.  Brevard and Warren Wilson will meet again for the final time this season on Monday, December 1, when the Tornados will travel to Warren Wilson for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
