Tornados Outlast Cobras
BREVARD, N.C.-The Brevard College men’s basketball team (4-17, 4-13 SAC) went on a 6-1 run over the game's final 40 seconds to seal a victory over the Coker Cobras (11-10, 8-9 SAC) in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
Dominique Pickett drilled a three-pointer with 26 seconds left to give BC a 85-83 lead, and the Tornados stayed in front for the duration.
The Cobras had erased an eight-point Tornado lead with 3:36 left in regulation to take an 81-80 advantage on a layup by Coker’s Larry Felder at the 1:05 mark.
Pickett put BC back in the lead with a pair of free throws on the Tornados next possession before Trey Marshall got to the line with 40 seconds left, sinking both attempts and putting the Cobras in front 83-82. Coker scored just one more point in the rest of the game, coming on a Julian Nelson free throw with 12.6 seconds left.
The Tornados hit five of their six free throw attempts in the final minute of the game to put the game out of reach for Coker.
Pickett delivered a game-high 27 points and dished out a game-high seven assists to fuel the Tornados, who had five scorers finish in double figures. The redshirt senior went 8-for-14 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the line.
Darius Moose added 18 points for BC while Alex Moe had a season-high 17 points. Miles Leathers finished with 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Freshman Trevon Shaw narrowly missed a double-double, going for 10 points and a team-high eight boards.
Stingy defense from the Tornados held Coker off the board for almost five minutes to start the game. Jonathan Gardner finally got the Cobras in the scoring column with a three-pointer at the 15:19 mark in the opening half.
Brevard will host the Carson-Newman Eagles in Bashamer Gymnasium on Monday at 8 p.m in a game that was originally scheduled for February 12th but postponed because of a snowstorm.
