Tornados Sweep Indians

BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados baseball team (3-3, 2-3 SAC) defeated the Catawba College Indians (1-7, 0-2 SAC) 7-6 in the opener and 1-0 in the second game to sweep a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Gil Coan Field on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: Brevard 7, Catawba 6
The Tornados took the opener in walk-off fashion as Bennett Hixson plated the winning run with a bases-loaded infield single with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Eric Renegar reached on a fielding error to start the 7th before Kody Spencer singled to center. BC executed a double steal to move both runners into scoring position, and the Indians then walked pinch hitter Alex McGee to set the table for the game winner.

Brevard jumped on Catawba starter John Tuttle for six earned runs over 4.1 innings, including five runs in the 1st inning. BC put together two walks and four hits in the bottom of the 1st, and tagged Michael Trombino (L, 0-1) for the run in the 7th.

The Indians tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the 2nd against BC starter Kevin Hamilton, who allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings. Tyler Conzen (W, 1-0) picked up the win in relief.

Game 2: Brevard 1, Catawba 0
Brevard starter Zach Joyce (W, 1-0) hurled a complete game one-hit shutout in the second game, striking out six Indians over seven innings. The Indians only hit came on a groundball single through the right side in the 2nd.

Hixon again drove in the game-winning run in game two, this time on a single through the left side with one out in the 5th. Spencer, who scored the winning run, started the inning with a double into the gap in left center before moving to third on a Brock Helton groundout.

Catawba starter Sean Grant (L, 0-3) was saddled with the loss despite allowing just six base runners in six innings of work.

The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday as they host a doubleheader with Mars Hill at Gil Coan Field beginning at 1 p.m. The Tornados were originally scheduled to play at Montreat on Tuesday and host Mars Hill on Wednesday, but field conditions at Montreat caused the game to be canceled. Wednesday’s game with Mars Hill was moved to Tuesday due to threat of wet weather later in the week.
