BC Splits on Day One of Catawba InvitationalFebruary 22, 2014
SALSIBURY, N.C.-The Brevard College Tornados softball team fell to Pfeiffer 5-4 in their first game of the Catawba Invitational but responded with a 7-1 win over Belmont Abbey in game two on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury Community Park.
Game 1: Pfeiffer 5, Brevard 4
The Falcons scored the go-ahead runs the top of the 6th against BC reliever Jamie Hrobak (L, 2-2) after the Tornados took a 4-3 lead on Casey Whitaker’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 5th.
Whitaker, who also started the game in the circle for BC, allowed three runs in the Pfieffer 3rd to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
BC got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd when Kinsey Parrish singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a passed ball.
Game 2: Brevard 7, Belmont Abbey 1
Hrobak (W, 3-2) picked up the win in game two, limiting the Crusaders to one run on six hits in seven innings in the circle.
The Tornados jumped on Belmont Abbey for two runs in the bottom of the 1st to take a 2-0 lead and Whitaker knocked her second homer of the afternoon in the 3rd to make it a 4-0 game. The junior finished 3-for-7 with two homers and five RBI’s on the day.
The Tornados scored two more runs in the 5th and added an insurance run in the 6th en route the commanding victory.
The Tornados continue action in the Catawba Inivitational with a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
