Tornados Handle Crusaders to Clinch Season SeriesApril 8, 2014
TIGERVILLE, S.C.- The Brevard College Tornados pulled out a 9-2 victory over the Greenville Crusaders at Ashmore Field on Tuesday afternoon to clinch the season series 2-1.
Brevard banged out 12 hits in the game as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd, and scored five unanswered runs to end the game after NGU scored twice in the 4th.
The Tornados set the tone in the 2nd on sacrifice flies by Kody Spencer and Billy O’Hara. After an Eric Renegar RBI double in the 3rd, Hunter Donaldson made it 4-0 with a run-scoring single through the right side.
The Crusaders made it 4-2 in the 4th, but BC responded with five runs over the next three innings to put the game out of North Greenville’s reach.
Donaldson made it 5-2 in favor of BC with another RBI single followed by an RBI double from Brock Helton in the 5th.. Matthew Proffitt delivered an RBI single to center in the 6th before an RBI from Renegar made it 8-2.
Tyler Tant capped BC’s scoring with an RBI groundout in the 7th inning.
Four BC hurlers scattered 11 hits to hold the Crusaders to two runs, and the Tornados pen tossed threw 5.1 scoreless innings in relief of J.D. Chaplain. Dustin Haithcox (W, 3-2) recorded the final out in the 4th with a runner on base before Kevin Hamilton tossed a scoreless 5th.
Lefty James Phillips (S, 1) delivered four scoreless innings to close the game as BC tacked continued to tack on runs.
The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to J.H. Moss Stadium to take on the Division I Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
