Brevard Cages Bulldogs, Wins Sixth StraightApril 12, 2014
BREVARD, N.C.-The Brevard College softball team clinched its sixth straight victory with a doubleheader sweep over the first-place Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, stealing the opener 1-0 before earning a 6-5 win in game two.
Parrish homered to deep left to leadoff the 2nd against Wingate starter Stacey Houser (L, 19-7), and finished 1-for-2 in the game.
That was all the offense Hrobak needed, allowing just four hits and a walk while fanning four Bulldogs in her 15th complete game this season. The sophomore stranded four runners in scoring position to make the one-run lead stick.
Game 2: Brevard 6, Wingate 5
The Bulldogs made it a one-run game in the 7th and had the winning run on second before Hrobak (W, 14-8) induced a ground out to end the game.
The Tornados battled back from an early 3-0 deficit with four runs in the 3rd inning, and scored a run in each of their final two at-bats to hold on.
Hrobak entered the circle in the 3rd in relief of Alyssa Miller, earning the final two outs of the inning to strand the tying run at second base. The righty limited WU to two runs over the final 4.2 innings, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out four.
Miller singled in Michelle Ray to jump-start the BC 4th before Ally Davneport scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game. The Tornados then took a 4-3 lead after sacrifice flies from Casey Whitaker and Parrish.
Wingate tied the game at 4-4 in the 5th, but BC regained the lead in their half of the inning on a Whitaker RBI single and went in front by two runs in the 6th on another RBI single from Miller.
The sweep knocks Wingate out of first place as the Tornados continue to climb the ladder in the conference standings. BC now sits in 7th place and is in position to qualify for the SAC Tournament, which will be held at LMU from April 24-27th.
The Tornados will honor their four seniors on Tuesday afternoon as they host the Anderson University Trojans for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
