Gruber named Honorable Mention All-AmericanJuly 30, 2014
GOSHEN, N.Y. – Senior linebacker Michael Gruber was named to the Collegiate Development Football League Honorable Mention list when the organization released its 2014 Division II Preseason All-American teams this afternoon.
Gruber was listed as a “player to watch” and was the only South Atlantic Conference player named to the honorable mention list by the CDFL. The senior has 279 career tackles, needing just 16 stops to surpass Prince Simunyu for the all-time lead in program history. Last season, he set a Brevard single-season record with 124 tackles, recovered a fumble, and had a pair of interceptions on his way to being named second team all-conference. He was also honored as a second team all-region and honorable mention All-American performer by The Football Gazette.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Jarrod Spears and Blake Baker were named to the CDFL All-American first team at the kick returner and defensive line positions, respectively, while Bears’ linebacker Tanner Bots was a third-team selection. Mars Hill’s Dimitri Holmes, a wide receiver, and Newberry linebacker Edmond Robinson represented the conference on the second team.
The Tornados open their 2014 schedule in Cullohwee, North Carolina against NCAA Division I opponent Western Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 6. Brevard opens the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, September 20 with a 1:00 p.m. contest against conference rival Carson-Newman.
