Tornados picked eighth in SAC preseason pollAugust 5, 2014
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Brevard College football team was picked to finish eighth in the South Atlantic Conference in the league’s annual preseason coaches’ poll, the league office announced today.
The Tornados, who are coming off a 3-8 campaign that included a pair of wins in conference play, are facing one of the most challenging schedules in Division II this year. The slate includes three teams that advanced to the Division II playoffs last season. The season’s first five contests include two Division I opponents and two teams that finished in last year’s final top 25 poll, including national runner-up Lenoir-Rhyne.
Carson-Newman, which advanced to the second round of the Division II playoffs, received 46 votes to take first place in the poll. National finalist Lenoir-Rhyne finished second with 45 points, while fellow playoff team Newberry took third place in the preseason rankings with 36 points.
Wingate was picked to finish fourth with a team that returns 18 starters from last year’s squad that went 3-4 in conference play. Rounding out the poll were Mars Hill, Catawba, Tusculum, and Brevard.
The Tornados will open the 2014 campaign at Western Carolina on Saturday, September 6. Kickoff in Cullowhee is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. After a road contest at Liberty, Brevard will host preseason conference favorite Carson-Newman for a 1:00 p.m. tilt in the Tornados’ home opener on September 21.
