Overholt, Gruber, Jeter named preseason all-conferenceAugust 5, 2014
ROCK HILL, S.C. – After placing three players on the all-South Atlantic Conference team at the conclusion of the 2013 campaign, the Brevard College football team will open the 2014 season with Andre Overholt, Michael Gruber, and Kelvin Jeter named to the preseason all-conference squad.
Overholt earned first team accolades as a kick return specialist. The senior running back has established himself as the most prolific kick returner in Brevard history, amassing 1,671 yards returning kickoffs and punts during his career. He returned 45 kickoffs for a school record 1,024 yards last season, an average of nearly 23 yards per attempt. Overholt is also considered a dangerous weapon in the running game, averaging 8.0 yards per carry last season. He needs just 114 rushing yards this season to break 1,000 yards for his career and is second in program history with 3,016 all-purpose yards.
Joining Overholt on the first team will be linebacker Michael Gruber. The senior from Walterboro, South Carolina set a Brevard single-season record with 124 tackles in 2013, topping his own 117-tackle effort the previous season. He needs just 16 tackles to break Brevard’s all-time mark, currently held by Prince Simunyu, of 294 career stops. Last year, Gruber reached double figures in tackles seven times, including a season-high 16 stops at Carson-Newman on September 21. He also broke up four passes, recovered a fumble, and picked off a pair of passes on the season.
Fifth-year senior running back Kelvin Jeter received second team honors after leading the Tornados with 800 rushing yards last season. He surpassed the 100-yard plateau on four occasions, including a season-high 148 yards on and two touchdowns just 15 carries in the season finale at Liberty. He reached the end zone eight time during his junior campaign. Jeter has averaged nearly seven yards per carry in his Brevard career and tops the all-time record book in rushing yards, total offense, and all-purpose yards.
The Tornados will open the 2014 campaign at Western Carolina on Saturday, September 6. Kickoff in Cullowhee is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. After a road contest at Liberty, Brevard will host preseason conference favorite Carson-Newman for a 1:00 p.m. tilt in the Tornados’ home opener on September 21.
