Linebacker led SAC with 9.8 tackles per game
Brevard College football player Stanley Jones has been chosen by Tornado fans as the Brevard Athletic Department's 2008 Fall Sports Most Valuable Player. Jones collected 71 of the 162 votes cast by visitors of BCTornados.com, or 43.8%.
Jones, a junior linebacker from Spartanburg, S.C., led the Brevard team with 98 total tackles on the season, and he led all South Atlantic Conference players with 9.8 tackles per game. Jones, who started all ten game for Paul Hamilton's squad, also tallied 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.
Jones was a two-time recpient of the Tornado Athlete of the Week award, being chosen as the top Tornado after both the fifth and sixth week of the 2008 fall season. He also was named 2nd team All-South Atlantic Conference by the SAC's eight head coaches.
Among the Sparkle City native's best games was a 21-tackle performance on September 27 against Lenoir-Rhyne and an 18-tackle day on October 25 against No. 17 Carson-Newman. Jones also tallied double-digits tackles on October 4 against No. 18 Wingate and November 8 against Newberry.
Jones, who played at Spartanburg High School for legendary coach Doc Davis, has led the Tornados in tackles each of the last two seasons.
The Tornado Fall Sports Most Valuable Player was determined by a fan poll on the frontpage of BCTornados.com. Candidates for the Tornado Athlete of the Week award were chosen by the Brevard College Sports Information staff. The poll opened on December 2, 2008 and closed on December 7, 2008.
The Tornado Athlete of the Week award will resume on January 4, 2009.
