ANDERSON, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s golf opened the 2014-2015 season on Monday, ending the first day of competition in eighth place at the Anderson University Invitational.
Kelsie Rhyne, a newly-announced recipient of the LPGA’s Marilynn Smith Scholarship, paced the Tornados with a first-round score of 91 that left her tied with Mars Hill’s Raven Brown for 29th place overall.
ZeAijah Mooney shot a 103 that was good for 36th place, while teammates Kate Keller and Stephanie Thomas finished the first round in a tie for 37th.
The Brevard team, which is comprised entirely of newcomers, finished the day in the eighth and final position with a score of 424. Milligan and Erskine are tied atop the leaderboard with a 29-over par 317, while South Atlantic Conference foes Lincoln Memorial, Queens, and Anderson sit within striking distance of the leaders as each trails by ten strokes or less.
Erskine’s Rachel Moore leads the individual competition, firing a two-over par 74 through the tournament’s first 18 holes. Braiden Furtick of Anderson is one stroke back in second place, while Milligan’s Mollie Stone, Queens’ Kylie Nizolek, and Nikita Arjun of Spartanburg Methodist round out the top five.
Tuesday’s final round begins at 9:00 a.m.
