Tornados blanked by Lenoir-RhyneSeptember 13, 2014
HICKORY, N.C. – After notching its first win of the season on Wednesday at Erskine, the Brevard women’s soccer team was unable to continue its winning ways on Saturday as the Tornados fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 5-0 in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.
The Bears (1-2-1, 1-0 SAC) outshot Brevard (1-3, 0-1 SAC) 22-6 in the contest and placed half of their attempts on frame to force six saves from Tornados goalkeeper Jocelyn Springer. Forward Katherine Nickels led Brevard with two shots, including one on goal. Midfielder Alyssa Bois had the Tornados’ only shot on goal in the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne got off to a fast start, notching its first goal in the second minute on the first score of the season from Jessica Tooley, who took a cross from Taylor Hockley and touched the ball into the net. Garcelle Alequine and Emily Atkinson stretched the lead to 3-0 by the 17th minute before a 19th minute penalty kick by Emmi Dunn ended the Lenoir-Rhyne scoring barrage.
The Bears would stretch their lead to five goals early in the second half with Tooley’s second goal of the match in the 50th minute, this time on a breakaway opportunity after which she was able to beat the keeper one-on-one.
The Tornados will return to the field on Wednesday, September 17 in a home nonconference matchup with North Greenville. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
