Rhyne named Marilynn Smith Scholarship recipientSeptember 26, 2014
BREVARD, N.C. – Freshman women’s golfer Kelsie Rhyne has been honored by the LPGA Foundation as a recipient of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship.
To be selected for a Marilynn Smith Scholarship, named for a founding member of the LPGA, a graduating high school senior must “demonstrate outstanding academic excellence, leadership skills and active involvement and service to her community” while also planning to play golf at the collegiate level. Scholarship winners receive $5,000 to put toward their undergraduate expenses. This year, the LPGA Foundation increased the number of recipients from 10 to 20, doling out a total of $100,000 to its honorees.
Rhyne came to Brevard from Taylorsville, North Carolina where she graduated with a 3.955 GPA and was a captain of both the golf and basketball teams. She has participated in volunteer work for the Special Olympics and Levine Children’s Hospital and hopes to work in the medical field after her graduation from Brevard.
“I’m really honored to have a player of Kelsey’s caliber in our women’s golf program,” said head coach Shannon Reid. “She is an unbelievable young lady with a bright future both on and off the golf course.”
Rhyne has led the Tornados in both competitions so far on the young season. She finished in a tie for 30th place at the Anderson University Invitational in her first collegiate event, then placed 28th in the Etowah Intercollegiate that Brevard hosted on Monday and Tuesday. She will next compete at the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Tusculum College, on November 1 and 2.
