Tornados sweep season series over VI, 66-59
Whitaker records third double-double of the season in Brevard's victory
Bristol, Va. - After jumping out to a 26-5 lead, the Brevard College women’s basketball team had to rely on clutch free throws down the stretch by Anna Schlobohm to complete the season sweep against Virginia Intermont College on Tuesday afternoon, 66-59.
The Tornados improve to 3-5, 0-1 in the SAC on the season, while the Lady Cobras fall to 2-11 on the year.
Virginia Intermont got on the board first in the 18:08 mark when Michelle Shockley made a layup, but Brevard tied the game up with a jumper by Schlobohm. After the teams traded three-pointers, the Tornados held the Lady Cobras scoreless over the next 6:35 as they went on a 21-0 run behind the inside play of Amanda Whitaker and Millie Wharton converting all four of her free throw attempts. Shockley finally broke the cold spell with a layup with 9:05 left in the first half.
Virginia Intermont would bring the game back within single digits just before halftime, before Samantha Winn put in a layup with seconds left in the clock to put the lead back to 11 as the Tornados headed to the locker room with a 35-24 lead.
The Tornados used full court pressure to hold the Lady Cobras to 27.6 percent (8-29), while Brevard shot 41.4 percent (12-29) in building their halftime lead.
Whitaker led all players with 13 points in the first half on 5-7 shooting, while Shockley led the Lady Cobras with nine points.
In the second half, the Lady Cobras continued to rally, bringing the game back within single digits, but were constantly rebuffed by three-pointers by Holli Flippo and Winn.
With five minutes to go, Nicole Collins brought Virginia Intermont back within single digits for good as she hit a layup and completed the three-point play to put the game at 60-51.
Brevard’s lead would shrink to four points with 30 seconds left in the game. Whitaker was fouled and sent to the line, but failed to convert, however the offensive rebound went to Schlobohm who went to the line with the score 63-59.
Schlobohm was able to convert one of the two free throws, then after a Virginia Intermont turnover, Schlobohm again went to the line and clinched the game with two free throws to seal the season sweep with the score 66-59.
The Tornados shot 37.5 percent (21-58) from the field for the game, while Virginia Intermont shot 33.9 percent (21-62). The difference of the game came from the free throw line as the Tornados shot 16-25 (64 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lady Cobras finished up the game going 13-23 (56.5 percent) from the line.
Whitaker led the Tornados in recording her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Schlobohm scored 12 points for the game, and Wharton scored double figures for the first time this season with 11 points.
Shockley led all scorers with 18 points, and Collins added 13 points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes of playing time.
Brevard heads home to Boshamer Gymnasium for the first time in a month on Saturday, December 30th, as they host Mars Hill College. Tip-off for the Tornados second conference game of the season is scheduled for 2 p.m. Virginia Intermont stays at home as they play next Tuesday, January 5th, with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
