Women's Soccer Falls to Regionally-Ranked Wingate in SAC ActionOctober 11, 2014
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer dropped its third straight contest to a regionally-ranked opponent as it fell to Wingate University, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action. With the loss, the Tornados fall to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in the SAC. The Bulldogs, who were ranked third in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Southeast poll, improve to 7-2-2 and 6-1.
Alexis Griffis, Anita Maryskova, and Katherine Nickels each produced one shot, all on target, for the Tornados but were unable to find the back of the net while Jocelyn Springer took the loss in net and made five saves.
Jade Montgomery scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Bulldogs, while Taylor Leyble also had a tally and dished out an assist. Kerri Alexander, Brook Howell, Samantha Leonard, and Maggie Smith all contributed with goals as well. Ashlyn Hardie turned away all three Tornados shots she faced.
Griffis and Nickels both fired their shots in the third and seventh minutes but were turned away by Hardie. Wingate grabbed the 1-0 lead late in the 13th minute as Montgomery received a pass inside the box by Naomi Matley, to score her ninth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs wasted little time to add to their lead as Howell broke down the field and beat Springer to the right of the net 1:55 after the first goal.
Montgomery picked up her second goal of the contest at 32:04 after tapping in a pass by AJ Lightbody to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
Brevard was unable to get any chances in the second half as the team was outshot 7-1 in that time. The Bulldogs added three more goals in the second half as Leonard scored at 49:21 with Lightbody’s second assist on the play, Leyble scored 18:35 later, and Smith rounded the scoring in the 81st minute to make make the score 6-0.
The Tornados return to action on Tuesday, October 14 to host the Valkyries of Converse College at 4 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, North Carolina.
