Tornados Drop 3-2 Double Overtime Thriller to Catawba in SAC PlayOctober 18, 2014
CATAWBA, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer team dropped a heart-breaking loss to Catawba College, 3-2, in double-overtime on Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference action at the Frock Athletic Complex. The Tornados fall to 3-10 and 1-7 in the SAC while the Indians improve to 10-4 and 5-3 in conference play.
Lizzie Graham scored her first goal of the season for the Tornados while Katherine Nickels came up with her team-leading fourth goal of the year. Anita Maryskova dished out an assist while Jocelyn Springer made seven saves in net.
Allison Baucom tallied twice and Kate Weisner netted her ninth goal of the season while Kiersten Peck contributed with two assists for the Indians. Bethany Davis made one save in a winning effort.
The Tornados struck for the only goal of the first half when Maryskova sent a through ball behind the defense and Graham beat the keeper one-on-one to give her team the lead just 16:15 into the contest, on the team’s first shot on goal. It was one of two shots taken by Brevard in the first half with the first one going wide moments before.
The Indians then went to outshoot Brevard 7-0 with two shots landing on target, but Springer came up big for the Tornados to hold onto the 1-0 advantage. Springer was tested early in the second stanza but turned away all three shots she faced in the first 20 minutes.
However the Indians tied the game when Baucom scored on a penalty kick at 76:16 to tie the game at one. Each team registered one shot over the next six minutes before Nickels gave Brevard a 2-1 lead with 6:21 remaining in regulation on a breakaway.
With time winding down though, the Indians scored with 1:10 left in regulation when Peck sent a cross into the box and Weisner headed the ball in for the tally to even the score.
During the first overtime period, Brevard was only able to muster a shot taken by Maryskova that went high, but it was Baucom’s second goal of the game 7:13 into the second overtime to send the Indians to a 3-2 victory.
Brevard returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 when it travels to Anderson, South Carolina to face the Trojans of Anderson University. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
