Graham Sends Tornados to 1-0 Double-Overtime Win over Mars Hill on Penalty KickOctober 25, 2014
BREVARD, N.C. – Lizzie Grahams' penalty kick in the 102nd minute sent the Brevard College women’s soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action. The Tornados improve to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in conference while the Lions fall to 0-15-1 and 0-10.
Graham had the lone goal of the match for the Tornados while Jocelyn Springer four saves in her third-career shutout. Tori Stajduhar turned away five shots for the Lions while the team had one save.
The Lions fired off the first three shots of the game but all three went wide of the net before Tornados’ Alexis Griffis shot at 25:25 was just saved by Stajduhar. She tipped another shot following a corner kick that went over the net in the 40th minute. Springer kept the game scoreless with three seconds left in the first stanza, stopping a shot by Mars Hill Rachel Blong.
Each team had multiple chances in the second frame as Blong again was stopped by Springer in the first 1:25. Brevard then fired off three shots between 69:20 and 73:39, but Stajduhar held strong for Mars Hill. Springer came up big moments later as well for the Tornados stopping a shot by Blong and Jordan Allen at 75:06, and 76:22, respectively, as the game went scoreless heading into extra time.
Mars Hill fired off the only shot in the first period of overtime in the 98th minute but it went high of the net. That set up for an exciting second overtime. Just 1:37 into the frame, Graham fired a shot that was saved by Stajduhar and 20 seconds later, Griffis fired a shot that was saved by the last line of defense for the Lions.
However, the ball was touched by the defenders hand and awarded Brevard a penalty kick. Graham took the shot and sent the ball to the corner of the net to send Brevard to victory.
The Tornados travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to face the Hawks of Chowan University on Tuesday October, 28 in a neutral site game. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. Brevard will then return home on Saturday, November 1 for the final game of the season while also celebrating senior day.
