Graham Lifts Tornados to 3-1 Win over Coker on Senior Day.November 1, 2014
BREVARD, N.C. –The Brevard College women’s soccer team ended the season on a high note with a 3-1 victory Coker on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play Brevard Soccer Field. The Tornados finished the year with a 6-11 overall record and 3-8 in the SAC. The Cobras ended with a 5-12 record and 3-8 in conference play.
The Tornados also ended the year on their longest winning streak since last season. It matched their highest win total of six wins since 2009 and had their best winning percentage of .545 since that year as well.
The game was also senior day for the Tornados and Lizzie Graham finished her final season picking up two goals in the win while Anita Maryskova also tallied while Jocelyn Springer turned away nine saves in 88:55 of play. Senior Bree McMahon played her final match of her career in the final 1:05 of the match.
Renee Ledesma scored the lone goal for the Cobras while Jordan Roy contributed with an assist. Lizz Morris stopped four Tornado shots in net.
Graham got the Tornados on the scoreboard just 5:18 in the match when she received a feed from Griffis and then dribbled into the box and tapped the ball into the open corner of the net. Coker then fired four shots in a four minute span between the 23rd and 27th minutes but Springer stopped three of them while one went wide.
Graham added gave her team a 2-0 lead early in the 33rd minute when she went by the defense and drilled a shot to the upper left corner for the tally. Griffis picked up her second assist on the day. Maryskova added the third goal for Brevard ripping a shot from just outside the 18 yard box over the stretch of Morris at 37:41.
The Cobras came out in the second half nine of the first 10 shots in the opening 28 minutes but Springer stood tall saving four while the other five missed the cage. Coker broke up the shutout with 10:07 left in the game when Ledesma and Roy converted on a little give and go play on a corner kick. Ledesma fired it from the side and found the far corner of the net out of the reach of Springer.
Coker had two more shots in the match to try and tie the game but Springer made a save and the second shot went wide of the net.
Brevard honored all six of its seniors today as well following the match: Graham, McMahon, Ana Drummond, Althea Dunn, Megan Jenkins, and Josie Rodriguez.
