Griffis and Nickels Earn All-SAC Honorable Mention AccoladesNovember 5, 2014
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard College women soccer junior’s Alexis Griffis and Katherine Nickels both received All-SAC Honorable Mention accolades for the Tornados this season, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
Griffis, who is from Rowlett, Texas, appeared and started in all 17 games for the Tornados at defense. She dished out two assists on the year, both of which came in the home season finale against Coker on November 1. Both of the assists came on goals by senior Lizzie Graham’s two goals during that game. She was also a part of a defense for Brevard that had four shutouts on the season.
Nickels, a native of Springfield, Ohio, was tied as the team leader in goals (four) while appearing in 16 games with seven starts. She also was tied with Graham in points with eight. She was second on the team in shots (21) and shots on goal (11), and also was in a three-way tie for first with two game-winning goals.
Nickels scored her first two goals during a 3-2 win over Erskine on September 10 while scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over North Greenville on September 17. Her fourth goal came against Catawba.
Brevard finished the year on a three game winning streak and matched its best win total (six) and matched its best winning percentage (.545) since 2009 while going 6-11 overall and 3-8 in conference play. Wingate forward jade Montgomery won SAC Player of the Year while Andersons’ Lyssa Engle gathered Freshmen of the Year Honors. Deedee Sanguinetti was given the recognition of Coach of the Year.
