Cook Finishes Fifth at SAC Championships, Named to All-Conference First Team

SALISBURY, N.C. – Both the Brevard College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning hosted by Catawba. The women’s team placed seventh among the 11 team field with 207 points. The men’s team did not qualify for a team result.

On the women’s side, junior Hannah Cook, from Havelock, N.C., paced the Tornados finishing fifth in the 5K race with a time of 19:07.82, 55.12 seconds off the leader from Queens University, Megan Wright. Cook was also named to the SAC All-Conference first team. Senior Heidi Kaartinen, an Espoo, Finland native, was the next top finisher for Brevard as she placed 51st among all runners with a time of 21:10.28. Teammate and classmate, Ashley Lowe, from Graham, N.C. was 19.14 seconds behind her.

Sophomores Madison Smith and Elana Raygoza placed 66th and 69th overall with times of 22:10.20 and 22:19.84, respectively. Wingate won the women’s championship with 47 points, while Queens, Anderson, Lenoior-Rhyne and Lincoln Memorial rounded out the top 5 teams.

On the men’s side, Hassan Kiprono, a freshman from Iten Kenya, was the top finisher for the Tornados as he finished 12th at 27:07.80, just 1:34.14 off the leader from Queens, Felix Duchampt. Kiprono also was named to the SAC All-Conference second team. Mars Hill won the 8K event with 27 points. Queens was 14 points off the leader coming in second while Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Anderson were the last three top five teams.
