Tornados Fall to Bulldogs of UNC Asheville in Exhibition Contest

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team dropped a 76-56 contest to Division I UNC Asheville on Saturday night in Kimmel Arena in an exhibition contest. For the opening 9:36 of the game, the Tornados had a lead as large as five points for a 17-14 lead before the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run over the next 3:31 to take a 26-17 lead.

Sophomore forward Madison Lenox led the Tornados with 16 points and two assists while junior Shelby Wolfe had 11 points and five rebounds and a block. Senior Taylor Hiatt and sophomore Chelsea Turner each had seven points while Hiatt had four boards and Turner had two.

The Bulldogs were led by KJ Weaver and Tianna Knuckles who had 19 and 14 points, respectively, while Weaver grabbed 11 rebounds and Knuckles had nine.

Paige Love opened the scoring just 1:19 on a tip in before junior Katie Williams knocked down a three pointer for the Tornados’ first points. Brevard then went to score four straight points by Wolfe and Lenox. After taking a 17-12 lead, however, UNC Asheville outscored 23-10 for a 35-27 halftime lead.

The Tornados were never able to regain the lead as the Bulldogs scored seven of the first 11 points of the second half and Brevard was only able to close the deficit to nine points 4:59 into the half as UNC Asheville held a 44-35 lead at that point. The hosts then went to outscore the visitors 32-21 for the rest of the game.

Brevard held the advantage in fast break points 7-2, including 7-0 in the first half but it was the 22-10 edge in second chance points and 38-11 bench points by the Bulldogs that troubled the guests.

The Tornados play one more exhibition game on Saturday, November 15 as they travel to High Point, North Carolina to take on the Panthers. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Brevard begins its regular season and opens South Atlantic Conference play against the Wolves of Newberry in Newberry, South Carolina on Saturday, November 22 for a 2 p.m. start.
