Brevard Leads by Seven going into the Half before Falling to High Point in ExhibitionNovember 15, 2014
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team held a seven point lead heading into the half before succumbing to the Panthers of High Point (N.C.), 72-65, on Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center during an exhibition contest.
Madison Lenox led all Brevard scorers with 16 points while also having six rebounds while Katie Williams finished with 12 points and four steals. Chelsea Turner and Shelby Wolfe each finished with 11 points.
The Tornados went on a 13-2 run in the final 3:44 of the first half Wolfe knocked down two free throws to tie the game at 27. Taylor Hiatt made a lay up to put the guests up 29-27 the Tornados scored seven of the next nine points to gain a 36-29 halftime lead.
In the first 2:20 of the second half, Brevard went up by as many as 11 points with Wolfe scoring four straight points and Hiatt making a shot for a 42-31 lead. The Tornados led 49-46 with 11:53 remaining before the Panthers tied it on a three pointer by Kaylah Keys. The teams traded back baskets before the hosts took the lead with 9:54 left and never gave it up. High Point led by as many as 10 points and as few as five with 24 seconds remaining as the score was 70-65 but a few missed shots late halted the comeback by the Tornados.
The Panthers were paced by Keys who finished with 16 points while going 4-7 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. Stacia Robertson finished with four points and seven boards.
The Tornados shot a 35.4% from the field while the Panthers were 27-62, which was good for 43.5% but the Tornados went 5-12 from 3-point range for 41.7% and shot an even 70% from the free throw line while the hosts shot a 65.2%.
Brevard begins its regular season on the road against South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry. The Tornados and the Wolves are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, November 22.
