Cross Country Wraps up Season at NCAA RegionalsNovember 22, 2014
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Brevard College women’s cross country team finished 21 out of 26 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama Saturday morning.
Hannah Cook, a junior from Havelock, North Carolina, paced the Tornados with a time of 24:13.93, finishing 38th among all runners in the 6K event. Senior Heidi Kaartinen, from Espoo, Finland, was the next finisher for Brevard with a time of 26:03.63 while freshman Leah Jostes finished just 41 seconds later.
Sophomores Elena Raygoza and Madison Smith finished with times of 27:53.13 and 28:51.82, respectively. Queens finished with the two top runners with Junior Catie Byrd completing with a time of 21:56.98 to win the event and teammate Megan Wright was right behind her with a time of 22:17.92.
Montevallo won the team event with 60 points while North Georgia came in second, 30 points behind. Wingate and Queens followed with scores of 91 and 165 while Flagler rounded out the top five with 176. Brevard finished 21st out of the 26 teams.
Freshman Hassan Kiprono, the Kenyan native, was the lone Tornado runner during the men’s 10K race finishing with a time of 34:33.96, good for 44th place out of the 165 runners. Since Kiprono was the only Brevard participant, there was no team qualification.
North Greenville’s junior Ahmad Nesbitt won the whole individual event, clocking in at 31:23.11. Mars Hill had two runners place in the top 10 while Queens was the next SAC school that placed runners in the top 10. Mars Hill won the team event with 76 points, followed by Mount Olive, which had 94 points. Queens, King and Columbus State rounded out the top five in the men’s 10K.
