Tornados compete in first Track & Field event of season

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Brevard College track and field teams competed in the first competition of the season at the Niswonger Invitational, hosted by Eastern Tennessee State University on January 16 and 17.

Senior Heidi Kaartinen, from Espoo, Finland, finished in the 38th spot during the 800 meter run in 2:39.98 while Elena Raygoza, a sophomore from Palmsdale, Calif. was 15.81 seconds behind her.

Kaartinen, freshman Leah Jostes, and sophomore Madison Smith all ran in the unseeded one mile run while Kaartinen and Jostes finished in 33rd and 34th, respectively. 

Freshman from Iten, Kenya, Hassan Kiprono finished 12th in the men’s one mile unseeded run in 4:44.44, under 20 seconds off the leader from Tennessee Wesleyan, Jacob Simmons.

The Kenyan native also ran in the 3000 meter unseeded run and was eight out of 15 runners with a time of 9:17.20 and third among South Atlantic Conference opponents from Mars Hill and Lincoln Memorial.

The top six runners from the event preliminaries with the best times qualify for the finals for each event. All of the events run by Brevard participants were unseeded events and were not qualified for the finals. Click here for full results.

Brevard is next in action on January 30 at the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
