Tornados defeat Shorter in season opener, 10-6February 10, 2015
ROME, Ga. - The Brevard College men’s lacrosse team won its season opener on the road against Shorter University, 10-6, at Ben Brady Field on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.
Matthew Dropuljic led the Tornados (1-0) with three goals while dishing out an assist while Adam Wiedemann and Sam Postma each had two goals. Ryan Taylor also scored while Weidemann contributed with four assists and Postma had one.
Alex Bazzell and Anthony Alfonso also had a goal each while Andrew Reilly turned away 10 shots.
Ben Janes led the Hawks with two goals while Tyler Kristiansen tallied a goal and an assist. Shorter got goals from three others while JR Willers had 10 saves in goal.
Janes scored two quick goals for Shorter 1:05 into the game and then again at 5:14 of the first period. Brevard answered 36 seconds later on a tally by Taylor to cut the lead before Dropuljic tied the game at two with just over seven and a half left in the first period. Postma had the assist on the tying goal.
Shorter retook the lead with 2:45 left in the opening period before the Postma and Dropuljic scored 28 seconds apart from each other to give the Tornados a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period.
Brevard scored twice in the second period on tallies by Wiedemann and Alfonso as the guests went on to score another four unanswered goals for a 10-3 lead at the end of three periods.
Shorter scored three late goals in the fourth quarter on goals by Kristiansen, Tyler Schott, and Jordan Getz with under seven minutes left but the Tornados played shutdown defense and had built a comfortable lead to hold on for the victory.
The Tornados were outshot by a 30-29 margin but had a 34-23 advantage in groundballs on the day. The Tornados also killed off all five extra man opportunities by Shorter, including three in the fourth quarter.
The Tornados return to action this Saturday as they host the Lions of Emmanuel College for a 3 p.m. start.
