Tornados pick up convincing 7-2 win over Spartanburg MethodistFebruary 14, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season by downing Spartanburg Methodist, 7-2, today on the campus of Brevard College.
David Taggart fell at No. 1 singles to Zac Dye in a close 7-5, 6-3 defeat while George Finch won at No. 2 singles against Mouhamed Gueye 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Christoph Plasa and Richie Liell had two very strong wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, (7-5, 6-4) and (6-4, 5-7, 10-3), respectively, that impressed head coach Ed Dickson.
“It was very important to have success at No. 5 and No. 6 singles,” explained Dickson. “Winning those matches on a very difficult day to play with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour is a confidence builder.”
Nathan Sabate defeated Harry Reed in convincing fashion at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0, while Rory Northam defeated Keith Quick II 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles competition, the Tornados picked up two wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as Taggart and Rory defeated Dye and David Hendrix 8-4 and Sabate and Finch defeated Reed and Gueye 8-6. Quick II and Reynard Julien defeated Liell and Plasa in the third doubles match of the afternoon 8-6.
“The wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles and a close match at No. 3 was a good way to start the day,” said Dickson. “It was a real mental test in singles and we came through and won three close matches that could have gone either way. We won the big points today. That is all I wanted to see, is us to continue to learn from our matches and keep getting better. Today, we did that,” Dickson went on to explain.
The Tornados return to action on Wednesday in Salisbury, North Carolina to face South Atlantic Conference foe, Catawba, for a 1 p.m. match.
