Tornados fall in close match to Newberry, 5-4, in SAC openerFebruary 22, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team was defeated by Newberry, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon in the Tornados South Atlantic Conference (SAC) opener on the campus of Brevard College.
The Tornados (1-2, 0-1 SAC) got wins at No. 1 singles as David Taggart defeated Fernando Espana 6-4, 6-2 while Nathan Sabate defeated Angel Pizarro in a shortened No. 2 singles match. Pizarro retired in the second set as he was down 3-0.
Rory Northam came back strong in the second and third sets after falling in the first set by defeating Carolos Nicolopulos 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
George Finch was defeated by Fernando Tous 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles while Christoph Plasa and Richie Liell were defeated at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
“We lost some close matches today that could have gone either way.” Explained head coach Ed Dickson. “We lost 5-4 but could have easily won 5-4 or 6-3. Those are matches we have to win. Give Newberry credit as they got key points at key moments during the matches today.
Dickson continued to say that like the women’s team, the men were hampered by a tough week of preparation due to bad weather during the week.
Sabate and Finch got the lone victory at No. 2 doubles by defeating Nicolopulous and Richard Zeh 8-3 but the pairs of Taggart and Northam, and Plasa and Liell were defeated in the other two doubles matches.
“We played pretty well even though our preparation was limited this week,” explained Dickson. “We’re very close on getting to where we need to be. We played well which is all I can ask for but we just have to continue to work hard and keep getting better as the year continues.”
The Tornados return to action and look to pick up their first conference win of the year as they host Tusculum on Friday. The matches begin at 1 p.m. Click here to view results from today’s match.
