Lincoln Memorial escapes with 81-74 win in Tornados final regular season home gameFebruary 23, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team were within two points with 40 seconds left before Lincoln Memorial pulled away for a 81-74 victory on Monday night in Boshamer Gymnasium during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play.
Nicole Graham completed the unconventional three point play for the Tornados (8-16, 6-14 SAC) to make it 76-74 Lincoln Memorial. However, a missed jumper and a tough call against the hosts proved costly as the Lady Railsplitters (14-12, 11-9 SAC) made six of seven free throws to put the game away.
Katie Williams led all scorers with 25 points along with three rebounds and an assist while Hadara Bannister contributed with 12 points, five boards and four assists. Bannister scored all of her points from beyond the arc on 4-of-6 shooting. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range in the second half.
Megan Pittman and Josey Harding each had 19 points for the Lady Railsplitters while Harding hauled in 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass. Katrina Ottesen had 14 points while Guy and Ross Mathis finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The game opened with five ties over the first 7:10. For every shot Lincoln Memorial made, the Tornados matched it before taking an 8-7 lead over with 16:48 left in the opening half on a Williams three. Lenox tied the game at 11 before tying the game at 13 again.
However, the Lady Railsplitters went on a 16-5 run over the next 5:39 to go up 29-18. The Tornados came within five points with a little over four minutes remaining in the first half and again with 2:16 left but Lincoln Memorial closed the half with a 35-28 lead.
Lincoln Memorial pulled away in the second half going building an 18 point lead on five separate occasions with 12:23 left in the game, leading 59-41. The Tornados went on an 11-0 run over the next over the next 3:23.
Williams began the run by knocking down a three pointer and forcing a timeout by the guests. A steal by Wolfe led to a fast break layup by Lenox before a bucket by Williams cut the lead to 10. Graham knocked down a three pointer with 9:00 left on the fast break to cut the lead to 59-52.
Back-to-back three’s by Bannister and Graham brought Brevard within seven again with 6:30 left to make it 65-58. Hardey put her team up 69-60 with 5:13 left before Crsip and Bannister hit back-to-back three pointers. The Tornados were down 72-69 with 2:05 left but only made the last bucket by Graham over the final minutes of the game.
The Tornados shot 42.6 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three point range. However, Lincoln Memorial shot 51.9 percent, which has been the norm for Brevard, allowing teams to shoot over 40 percent in 16 losses and have allowed over 70 points per game during that time.
The Tornados were out rebounded 37-27 but only 12-10 on the offensive glass while having a 26-16 advantage on points from the bench. They also had 10 fast break points compared to two for the Lady Railsplitters while each team had 15 points off turnovers. Lincoln Memorial had a large 34-12 margin in points in the paint, which was key statistic throughout the contest.
The Tornados will play their third game in five days as they travel to Mars Hill on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Tornados wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Wingate University.
