Wingate downs Brevard in series openerFebruary 27, 2015
WINGATE, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team fell to Wingate 3-1 in the opening game of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series on Friday afternoon.
The Tornados (7-7, 3-6 SAC) pushed across a run in the first inning to tie the contest at one run apiece on an RBI single down the left field line by Hunter Donaldson. Matthew Proffit was the first man to reach, lacing a 1-2 offering from Bulldogs’ (10-3, 7-3 SAC) starter Jimmy Doolittle through the left side for a one-out single. He was advanced to second on a groundout to the third baseman by Pat Quinn to set the stage for Donaldson’s heroics.
The tie proved to be short-lived. Wingate retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on an unearned run that came to the plate on an RBI groundout to the shortstop and tacked on an additional insurance run in the fifth inning.
The lead was more than enough for Doolittle, who scattered five hits across seven innings. Brandon Donahue earned the save with two innings of perfect relief. Doolittle and Donahue were masterful, striking out 11 Tornados’ hitters without allowing a walk and retiring the final 15 batters they faced.
Donaldson was the hard-luck loser for Brevard, giving up three runs, one of which was unearned, on seven hits. He struck out five batters while walking two. Tyler Konzen allowed a pair of hits in two innings with three strikeouts, while Teke Scudder was perfect in an inning of relief.
Brevard and Wingate will conclude their series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
