Brevard can't overcome early deficit in loss to WingateFebruary 28, 2015
WINGATE, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s lacrosse team fell to Wingate, 18-7, in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Alyssa Barrett led the Tornados (0-2, 0-1 SAC) with a hat-trick while Caitlyn Nemeth had two tally’s. Nina Siu and Allie McMillan each had a goal while Livia Harrienger had two assists. Shelby Arsenault took the loss, playing the first half and making five saves while allowing 13 goals. Kayla Henderson allowed five goals in the second half and had a save.
Erin Murphy, Emily Nosek, and Logan Bounds each had three goals for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0 SAC) while six other Wingate players combined for the other nine goals. Murphy had two assists while Nosek had one. Nicole Hinkle stopped four shots in net in a winning effort.
Bounds opened the game with a goal just 1:06 elapsed into the game before Barrett tied the game at one 2:31 later. Murphy and Brittany Andrews answered with two golas for the hots before Siu brought the visitors within one. Jenna Griffith scored a free position shot with just under 19 minutes to go in the half before Barrett answered with a free position goal of her own with 18:16 to go.
Wingate, however, used an eight goal attack to go up 12-3 with 3:59 remaining in the first half before going into the half up 13-4. Nemeth opened the second half sprinting down the field to score for Brevard just 23 seconds into the second half to try and spark the guests.
Even holding Wingate to just five goals in the second half, Brevard had been put into a large deficit to overcome as they only scored three in the second half.
Brevard was outshot 30-15 in the game but only 8-7 in the second half. The Tornados also had 49 ground balls compared to Wingate’s 52.
The Tornados return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina to face Converse. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
