Tornados fall to Catawba, 22-8 during SAC actionMarch 7, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s lacrosse dropped a 22-8 contest to Catawba on Saturday afternoon during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action.
The Tornados (0-4, 0-2 SAC) were led by Alyssa Barrett and Caitlyn Nemeth, who each had a hat-trick, while Allie McMillan and Kelly Kearnan each had a tally. Barrett, Nemeth, and Livia Herrienger each had assist while Shelby Arsenault turned away 13 shots in net.
Caroline Beggs, Alyssa Corace, and Meredith Jones each had four goals for the Indians (3-2, 2-1 SAC) while Kirstyn Kruse had three. Four other Catawba players jumped in on the scoring while Beggs had three assists and Corace had two. Bethany Davis picked up the win and stopped five shots in the first half while Madison Anselmo had seven saves in the second half.
Megan Shortt gave Catawba the quick 1-0 lead just a minute into the game before Nemeth answered 53 seconds later for the Tornados. However, it was all Catawba over the next 19 minutes as they scored eight straight goals to go up 9-1 with just under 10 minutes left in the opening half.
The Tornados strung together three straight goals as Barrett scored with 8:56 left in the opening half and Nemeth scored two. Three unanswered goals by the Indians put them up 12-4 before Kearnan received a pass from Livia Herrienger from behind the cage to make it 12-5 at the end of the first 30 minutes.
Hannah Scott scored 36 seconds into the second half before Barrett scored her second goal of the contest at 28:44. Catawba again used an eight goal advantage over the next 18:40 to go up 21-6. McMillan and Barrett scored the final two goals for Brevard before Jones finished the scoring with 1:14 left in the game.
The Tornados were outshot 35-21 in the game but won 17 of the 32 draw controls in the match. They were also good on nine of 11 clear attempts in the game.
Brevard will host the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow at 1 p.m.
