MONROE, N.C. – A two over par performance from Luis Vega earned the sophomore a place on the all-tournament team and propelled Brevard to a fifth-place finish at the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Vega shot a final-round 76 at the 54-hole tournament to finish in a three-way tie for third place and earn Brevard’s second all-tournament team nod of the season. He finished six strokes back of individual champion Leennawat Numpituckchaikul from King University, who was under par in all three rounds and outpaced North Greenville’s Evan Gfeller by two strokes.
Close on Vega’s heels was teammate Trym Falch. The Norway native was three strokes over par for the tournament, just one shot behind Vega, and finished tied with Tucker MacDonald of North Greenville for sixth place overall.
The Tornados were in contention for the team title heading into Tuesday’s final round, but were undone by a team score of 304, Brevard’s highest round of the tournament. Tusculum had trailed by five strokes after 36 holes, but roared back on Tuesday with a 291, the second-lowest round of the tournament, to move from fifth place to first and best Mars Hill by two strokes for the team title.
Brevard’s Oskar Lundgren had the team’s third-best score at nine strokes over par. Declan Addison and Sebastian Strehl rounded out the Brevard contingent with individual scores of 238 and 239, respectively.
The Tornados return to action next Monday and Tuesday as Brevard travels to South Carolina to compete in the Cliffs Intercollegiate hosted by North Greenville.
