Bears down Brevard in series openerMarch 20, 2015
HICKORY, N.C. – The Brevard College baseball team suffered a series-opening loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday night, falling 8-2 at Bears Field.
The Bears (18-11, 7-9 SAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Ryan Perkins in the first inning. Brevard (12-15, 7-11 SAC) responded two frames later. Caleb Sherman led off the third with a walk and advanced to second on a single to right field by Christian Dix. After a fielder’s choice yielded the first out of the inning, Hunter Donaldson’s single loaded the bases and set the table for Ryan Smith, whose single up the middle plated the game’s first two runs.
Lenoir-Rhyne, however, wasted no time in retaking the lead in the bottom of the third. Brantley Rumford followed a leadoff walk with the Bears’ second home run of the contest off starting pitcher Hunter Donaldson. A sacrifice fly later in the inning and gave Lenoir-Rhyne a three-run advantage. The Bears added an insurance run in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete their scoring.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Landon Elks was credited with the win after taking over for starter Thomas St. Clair to begin the fourth inning. Elks gave up just one hit over the final six frames, a leadoff triple to Matthew Proffitt in the eighth inning, and didn’t surrender a run in improving his record to 4-0 on the season. He totaled four strikeouts and issued one free pass. Donaldson suffered the loss for Brevard, giving up five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
Three Bears finished with multi-hit games as Lenoir-Rhyne pounded out 11 hits on the evening. Perkins, Rumford, and David Newcomer tallied two RBI apiece. Proffitt had an impressive game at the plate for the Tornados, going 2-for-4 with a double and his first triple of the season.
The Tornados will seek to win the series against Lenoir-Rhyne with a pair of games beginning tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
