Tornados unable to pick up first SAC win against Lincoln MemorialMarch 24, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team were unable to pick up its first conference win of the season, falling to Lincoln Memorial, 7-2, during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play on Tuesday afternoon. The Tornados fall to 4-9 overall and 0-7 in the SAC. The Railsplitters move to .500 overall with a 4-4 record and one game above .500 in conference play at 3-2.
David Taggart picked up his fifth win of the season at No. 1 singles by defeating Joshua Coulthard, 6-4, 2-0 before Coulthard retired from play in the second set. Nathan Sabate won his third match in four tries at No. 3 singles by beating Pepe Batalla. Sabate lost the first set 6-4 before coming back in the second set to win 7-5. He won the tie-breaker set 10-4.
The Tornados were unable to win any of the other matches but Christoph Plasa played a close match in the fifth singles slot. He won the first set 7-5 against Stefan Hall before falling by the same score in the second set. He lost 1-0 (10-6) in the third tie-breaking set.
George Finch lost at No. 2 singles to Will Sparks while Rory Northam fell 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth singles slot. Richie Liell was swept at No. 6 singles.
Taggart and Northam fell 8-5 in the top doubles slot against Coulthard and Sparks while Sabate and Finch lost by the same score in the second slot. Plasa and Liell were swept 8-0 in the third doubles match against Hall and Carlos Zunino.
The Tornados will play for consecutive days for the third time this season as they host Lenoir-Rhyne tomorrow afternoon. Matches begin at 2 p.m.
