Williams named first team all-state by NCCSIAMarch 31, 2015
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior guard Katie Williams picked up a significant postseason honor on Monday afternoon as she was named first team all-state in the College Division by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association.
Williams, who was named a second team all-South Atlantic Conference performer by the league’s coaches, was the conference’s fourth-leading scorer and three-point shooter this season. She averaged 16.8 points per game and was a remarkably consistent shooter, knocking down 42.4 percent of both her overall field goals and her three-point attempts on the year.
One of Williams’ greatest assets was her scoring consistency. She reached double figures in 16 of the 22 games in which she played this season, topped 20 points on seven occasions, and had a streak of 11 straight contests in which she poured in at least 15 points. Her best game came in a televised win over Lenoir-Rhyne on January 31, when she set Brevard’s NCAA-era record with 35 points.
She was named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week on February 9 after scoring 51 total points in wins over Mars Hill and Queens the previous week. The junior Robbinsville, North Carolina native is 353 points shy of Brevard’s NCAA-era scoring record and needs 234 points next season to become the second Tornado to surpass 1,000 since the school joined the Division II ranks prior to the 2008-2009 campaign.
Williams played a large role in helping Brevard to an 8-18 overall record and a 6-16 mark in SAC play. The Tornados equaled last season’s mark for the most league wins since attaining NCAA membership, while the team came within one victory of tying the 2009-2010 squad for most wins in the modern era and posted its second-best winning percentage in that time frame.
Williams’ honor was given by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA), which is comprised of Sports Information Directors all levels of collegiate athletics across North Carolina. The organization selects all-state first and second teams in the University Division (NCAA Division I) and College Division (NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA) annually.
The South Atlantic Conference was well-represented on the College Division first team, with four of the five members coming from league schools. Mars Hill’s Camille Glymph, Wingate’s Chantal Dunbar, and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Jazmine Charles were the other SAC representatives on the first team, while Conference Carolinas Player of the Year McKenzie Owen from Belmont Abbey rounded out the first team selections.
