Tornados down Lees-McRae, 19-6, in a non-conference tilt

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s lacrosse team matched its longest winning streak of the season with a 19-6 victory over Lees-McRae on Tuesday afternoon at Tate Field.

The Tornados last three-game winning streak was at the beginning of the season when the team began the year at 3-0 against Shorter, Emmanuel, and North Greenville. With the win, the Tornados improve to 7-6 overall while the Bobcats fall to 1-9 on the season.

Adam Wiedemann led Brevard with five goals and seven assists for a 12 point game, a career-high for the freshman. He also matched his career-high in assists in the contest. Sam Postma had four goals on the day. Anthony Alfonso and Matthew Dropuljic each had three goals while Dropuljic contributed two assists and Alfonso had two.

Brendan Friss had two tallies while Kris Mousseau and Ryan Taylor each had one. Nick Bier had two assists while Taylor and Tyler Curtin each had one dime. Andy Reilly played 39:46 of action and made six saves while Xzavier Holmes-Copeland had five saves in relief.

Tanner Jones scored twice for Lees-McRae while Blaine Stottlar had a goal and two assists. Joshua Shingleton had a tally and an assist while Dalton Lamb and Louis Parks each scored. Jordan Lombardo took the loss in net and had 13 saves.

The Tornados took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame with Wiedemann putting the guests on the board 59 seconds in. Taylor added 1:20 later after his first shot was saved nine seconds earlier.

The Bobcats tied the game at two with just under eight minutes left in the first quarter before the Tornados offense exploded for five straight goals with Wiedemann assisting on all of them. Alfonso started the scoring with 6:38 left in the quarter with Postma scoring 1:18 later.

Dropuljic scored 42 seconds later with Alfonso and Postma ending the quarter with the final to goals for a 7-2 lead. Parks opened the second quarter with a tally just 33 seconds in before Wiedemann scored three of Brevard’s next five goals to go up 12-3 with 4:21 left in the half. Dropuljic and Posta had the other two goals for the visitors. Jones scored for the hosts with 1:44 left in the half.

After leading 12-4 at the half, the Tornados opened the third quarter with another five goal outburst with five different scorers to build a 17-4 lead entering the fourth quarter. Parks scored a man-up goal with 5:07 gone in the final frame.

Brevard scored two more goals to the Bobcats one to end the game at 19-6. Brevard outshot its opponent 42-35, including 25-16 in the first half. The hosts outshot the visitors 19-17 in the second half. The Tornados also had 42 ground balls and won 17 of 29 face-offs in the game.

Brevard was also good on 14-of-16 clear attempts while the Bobcats were successful on the same amount with three more attempts. Brevard also had one man down goal in the game while holding Lees-McRae to just 1-of-8 with the extra man.

The Tornados wrap up the regular season with two home contests and look to hold onto the final spot for the South Atlantic Conference tournament. The first contest is this Saturday against Lincoln Memorial with the game beginning at 1 p.m.
