Falch leads Tornados to second-place finishApril 4, 2015
ETOWAH, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s golf team finished in second place four strokes behind South Atlantic Conference foe Tusculum at the 2015 Etowah Spring Challenge.
Brevard hosted the 18-hole tournament at nearby Etowah Valley Golf Club, located 10 miles down Highway 64 from the Tornados’ campus. The small field was comprised of the Tornados, Pioneers, and fellow SAC members Catawba and Mars Hill. North Greenville also sent several golfers that competed as individuals.
Trym Falch paced the Tornados with a one-over 73 on the day after completing his round with four birdies. He finished locked in a three-way tie for second with Tusculum’s Brad Hawkins and Mac Bradley of North Greenville, giving Brevard its best individual finish of any tournament this season.
Sebastian Strehl also had a solid outing for the Tornados, finishing three strokes over par on the afternoon with Brevard’s second-best score. Strehl had a fantastic showing on the back nine, completing the final half of the course two strokes under par to rebound from a difficult front nine and finish tied for fifth place overall. His round was capped with an eagle on the par-five 18th hole.
Oskar Lundgren and Luis Vega rounded out the scorers for the Tornados by finishing at four over par in a tie for eighth place. Florian Peyssonneaux’s 17th-place finish at seven strokes over par was tops among the Brevard contingent competing as individuals.
Tusculum was paced by individual champion Warren Cheney, who was the only golfer to finish at even par in Saturday’s windy conditions after birdieing the final hole. Strong showings from Cheney and Brad Hawkins, who tied with Falch for second place, allowed the Pioneers to take the team title despite losing Chris Hutson to a back injury 12 holes into the tournament.
Brevard bested conference opponents Catawba and Mars Hill by 16 and 17 strokes, respectively, in the Tornados’ final tune-up before the SAC Championships later this month. The conference championship will be held April 19-21 at the Firethorne Golf Club in suburban Charlotte.
