Cobras put Tornados in early deficit, escape with a 15-7 victory.April 11, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. –The Brevard College men’s lacrosse team dropped its final regular season contest to Coker, 15-7, on Saturday afternoon during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action at Brevard High School.
The Tornados finished the regular season with an 8-7 record, their best record in their second year of existence, and 3-5 in the SAC, their most wins in conference play. The Cobras finish with a 9-3 overall record and a 7-1 conference record to put them in a tie for the top spot in the SAC.
Both teams have qualified for the conference tournament with a possibility of having a rematch on Tuesday, April 14 in Hartsville, South Carolina depending on the outcome of the Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba later tonight. If the Bears beat the Indians tonight, the Tornados would play at Coker. However, if the Bears lose, they will the number three seed and will face Brevard at home.
Adam Wiedemann and Matthew Dropuljic led the Tornados with two goals each while Wiedemann also had an assist. Sam Postma, Anthony Alfonso, and Ryan Taylor each had a tally. David Buono, Brendan Friss, and Postma also each had a helper. Andy Reilly, who celebrated senior day prior to the contest, had 14 saves in net in his final home contest of his Brevard career.
John Bretton led the Cobras with four goals while Josh Wassum and Shane Wilson each had three goals. Wassum also picked up an assist while Ryle Marsh had two goals and a helper. Three other Coker players picked up a tally while Tim Ryan had 12 saves in net.
The Cobras looked to take over the game early with three early goals in the first eight minutes. Bretton scored with just 1:52 gone in the game while Wassum scored with 7:11 left in the opening quarter. Josh Smith scored 11 seconds later after he ran down the field following a face-off win and put the visitors up 3-0.
Dropuljic answered for the Tornados with one of their two shots in the first period with 3:17 left in the opening period before Wassum tallied 19 seconds later to put Coker up 4-1 at the end of the first frame.
Brevard answered with a goal by Wiedemann at 13:39 and then a tally by Taylor seven seconds later. He too won a face-off and sprinted down the field to bring the hosts within a goal. However, the Cobras answered with two more to put the guests up 6-4 going into the half.
Postma made it 6-4 Coker early in the second half but the Cobras answered with three straight to go up 9-4 with 6:43 left in the third period. The teams then traded goals to finish the period as Coker led 11-5 entering the final period. Marsh picked up the only man-advantage goal of the game on the only penalty in the contest 1:05 into the final period.
The Tornados answered but Coker countered with two straight to go up 13-6 midway through the final period. Alfonso scored his 28th goal of the year before Bretton and Patrick Timothee sealed the deal for Coker.
The Cobras had a 44-27 shot advantage, including a 12-2 margin in the first period while also winning 15 of the 26 face-offs. They were also a perfect 21-for-21 on clear attempts while Brevard was good on 14 clears with two less attempts.
