Daugherty wins on senior day as Tornados fall to No. 31 TusculumApril 12, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – Senior Katie Daugherty played her final match as a Brevard student on senior day and it could not have ended any better for the Belton, Texas native. Although the Brevard College women’s tennis team fell to No. 31 Tusculum, 8-1, in its regular season finale, Daugherty stole the show in the top singles slot and had a large crowd of supporters.
Daugherty was trailing 4-1 in the first set against Kealee Heffner before coming back to come even at six. A tough tie-breaker in the first set went in favor of Heffner 8-6 after both battled in a back-and-forth contest.
Daugherty ran into the same trouble in the second set before coming back to win it 6-4 and forced the third set tie-break. She went on to win the tie-breaker 10-3 to give the Tornados their only win of the day.
Tusculum came into the match ranked 31st in the nation and eighth in the region while improving to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play while the Tornados ended their season with a 1-16 record and 0-11 in the conference.
Jule Hermann dropped the second slot singles match 6-3, 6-0 to Erin Mills while Nirvanna Silva fell at No. 4 singles to Kate Hutchinson by the same score. Lisa Pettig lost to Franziska Funke at No. 3 singles. Camille Cameron was swept in the fifth singles match while Anita Maryskova lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to Amanda Summer.
Daugherty and Hermann dropped the top doubles match to Funke and Summer 8-3 while Pettig and Silva lost 8-0 in the second doubles match. Cameron and Maryskova fell to Hutchinson and Emily Waters by the same score in the third doubles match.
