Tornados in eighth after SAC Championship first round

MARVIN, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s golf team wrapped up the first round of competition in eighth place at the SAC Men’s Golf Championship, firing a first-round 314 that was 19 strokes off the pace set by Tusculum.

The Pioneers opened up a six-stroke lead on the rest of the field by shooting a seven-over 219 as a team, finishing the day as the only school with a sub-300 score. Wingate and Queens finished the day 13- and 14-over, respectively, while Lincoln Memorial was fourth at 17 strokes over par.

Trym Falch paced the Tornados with a strong showing, finishing in a tie for seventh with a three-over 75. Tusculum’s Nick Forsberg paced the field with a first-round 70, two strokes clear of Benedict Gebhart and Phillip Konnikov of Wingate.

Luis Vega, who was named honorable mention all-conference this season, and Oskar Lundgren were both seven strokes over par to finish the first round in a tie for 31st. Craig Stephen and Sebastian Strehl were nine and ten strokes over, respectively, to round out the Tornados’ contingent.

Brevard’s round included 11 birdies and 43 pars. The Tornados were at their best on par five holes, averaging 5.05 strokes per hole to finish one over par.

The tournament had been scheduled as a 54-hole event, but heavy rains at the Firethorne Country Club on Sunday forced the cancelation of the first round of play. Tomorrow’s second round will conclude the rain-shortened tournament.
