Donaldson named all-SAC honorable mention

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The South Atlantic Conference baseball head coaches have voted junior right-handed pitcher Hunter Donaldson to the all-league honorable mention team.

Donaldson made eight appearances on the mound for the Tornados, all starts, and finished with a 5-3 overall record. He primarily pitched as the team’s Friday starter, throwing the first game of a weekend conference series. In this pressure-packed role, Donaldson compiled a 2.89 ERA and struck out 29 batters.

He allowed opposing batters to hit .251 against him and gave up a team-low 1.37 walks and hits per inning pitched. Donaldson saved his two best pitching performances for his final starts of the season, helping the Tornados to their first SAC Baseball Championship berth since the 2012 season.

Donaldson had his best outing to date in a 10-2 win at Anderson on Good Friday, scattering seven hits across eight innings and giving up two runs, one of which was unearned. He then followed that up with a dominant start at Tusculum, which at the time sat in second in the conference standings. Donaldson threw 149 pitches in a complete-game victory, allowing just one run while striking out seven batters for the second consecutive start. The win, coupled with J.D. Chaplain’s complete-game victory the next day, clinched Brevard’s postseason berth.

In addition to his exploits on the mound, Donaldson proved himself to be one of Brevard’s most potent offensive weapons as the everyday first baseman or designated hitter. His .336 batting average, 10 doubles, and 20 walks led the team, and he was second with 21 RBI and 23 runs scored. His on-base percentage reached .417 and he slugged .425, all while committing just four errors in 261 defensive chances for a fielding percentage of .285.

Donaldson is the probable starter for the Tornados in their first postseason contest in three years, a win-or-go-home contest against sixth-seeded Anderson in conference tournament action in nearby Forest City, North Carolina. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
